A Timeless Treasure in Davis Woods

Nestled in the historic Davis Woods area, this home is rich with character and a story that spans generations. Originally designed and built in 1960 by renowned Atlanta architect Earl McMillian, the home was commissioned by Anna and Carl Buechert. The Davis family, who once owned the surrounding farmland, gifted the Jett Road parcel to McMillian as a wedding present, with the stipulation that the lots remain 3-5 acres—a tradition that has preserved the area's charm to this day.

McMillian’s homes are known for their distinctive features, and this home is no exception. Hallmarks of his design include brick floors, hidden doors, and unique storage spaces. Anna Buechert, a master gardener from West Virginia, was deeply intentional about the home’s orientation and landscape. She strategically positioned the house to face north, ensuring minimal direct sunlight, and planted trees to provide natural cooling—a necessity in the years before air conditioning. In fact, the home’s original HVAC system, installed by Carl’s engineering company (which also worked on Hartsfield-Jackson Airport), remained in use for decades, maintained by one of the few experts in Atlanta who knew how to service it.

Anna’s DIY spirit was ahead of its time. She cultivated an abundant garden, canned her own food, and utilized a dedicated canning room, woodworking space, and germination bench in the basement. Her passion for self-sufficiency and craftsmanship left a lasting impression on the home’s legacy.

When the Ewings purchased the home, Anna was eager to hear about their renovation plans. With a laugh, she advised them against painting the original dark wood paneling, warning that it would need upkeep over the years. The Ewings painted anyway—and she was right! Their connection with Anna and Carl extended beyond the closing table, as the Buecherts invited them back for a celebratory gin martini toast!

In 2023, after years of cherished memories, the Ewings embarked on a thoughtful renovation, preserving the home’s original charm while enhancing it for modern living. They collaborated with Caroline Rolader of Reu Architects to design a seamless expansion and entrusted Paces Builder Group to execute their vision with precision and care. With the help of Colleen Price of BTO Dwelling, the finishing touches—paint colors, lighting, hardware, furniture, and fabrics—transformed the house into a warm and inviting home.

Today, this Jett Road home stands as a beautiful blend of past and present, honoring its rich history while embracing contemporary elegance. As part of the Chastain Park Home & Garden Tour, it offers visitors a glimpse into a home where craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and family stories intertwine to create something truly special.
